Notes
Radio Radio is a sixteen-part series of forty-five-minute broadcasts which present the work of the most innovative contemporary sound and radio artists (Prix Italia winners, Prix Futura winners, SONY Award winners and platinum-selling musicians, as well as the more marginal). The central research question it poses (both through its own composition and the conversations with the artists) is: `What are the dimensions of and possibilities for contemporary radio art? Programme 8 (http://www.ubu.com/sound/radio_radio/migone.html) is an excellent example of this research. Its original research into the contemporary radio/sound artists provides a set of source texts for modern experimental radio and is used by academics and radio producers alike as an international map of contemporary innovative radio. It is cited in numerous scholarly texts (e.g.: http://www.soton.ac.uk/~bepc/forum/Cheek on Cobbing.pdf) and appears on the syllabi of numerous university courses around the world (e.g.: http://www.english.heacademy.ac.uk/archive/publications/reports/living_writers.pdf). Radio Radio also innovates within the form of radio arts interview programmes. Here programme 4 is a good example (http://www.ubu.com/sound/radio_radio/cheek.html). The series was the first to deploy the new radio transitional device of the voice bumper. This technique suggests new terrain for the future of radio documentary and interview editing, and has been instrumental in developing a new semantic vocabulary for radio analysis (a taxonomy of rhetorical tropes for the digital audio editing of radio speech). Spinelli has been interviewed about the series and its research content for radio in the US and Europe, as well as on the internationally-distributed weekly public radio program of the Modern Language Association, Whats the Word (http://www.mla.org/radio_show_194). In addition, Radio Radio has been included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Television and Radio in New York and will feature on a forthcoming instalment of the online literary/sound journal Audible Word (www.audibleword.org).Full text available
