Notes

Within the second heart sound the aortic valve closure usually precedes closure of the pulmonary valve. In patients with Left Bundle Branch Block and pacemaker patients the reverse occurs. An appropriate group of patients for a controlled study were selected aided by Richard Vincent, consultant cardiologist, Royal Sussex County Hospital. Monitoring equipment was built and analysis techniques developed to give a suitable display of the results. The designs were supplied to Staplethorne Ltd. (www.staplethorne.co.uk) to contribute towards their micro-SMART award for CardioClock (www.dti.gov.uk/files/file39973.doc). Results using wavelet analysis are much better than achieved by conventional listening.
