[Review] Wendy Sutherland-Smith (2008) Plagiarism, the Internet and student learning: improving academic integrity
journal contribution
posted on 2023-06-07, 22:19 authored by James WilliamsJames Williams, David JamesPlagiarism is on the rise in all phases of education, from children copying coursework in school, to the PhD student plagiarising substantial parts of a thesis. At least, this is the commonly held perception of the problem in the Internet-dominated world of information accessibility. Universities will have policies and procedures for dealing with plagiarism. In some institutions, software is used to examine and compare submitted work with millions of pages on the Internet in an attempt to detect plagiarism. The penalties range from automatic failure of a coursework element to expulsion from a programme or institution. But do we really understand what plagiarism really is and, more importantly, why it happens? Even if we do have a notion of what the act means in practice, how do we deal with it?
