Communication with children and young people: learning pathways to competent practice, through qualification and beyond

presentation
posted on 2023-06-07, 22:54 authored by Michelle LefevreMichelle Lefevre
Effective communication, engagement and direct work by social workers are central to ensuring that children and young people¿s welfare is promoted, that they are protected, and that they have a voice in assessment, decision-making and service planning. However, serious case reviews, workforce inspections and research studies continue to indicate shortcomings in social workers¿ capabilities in this respect. Whilst the pressures of a complex role undertaken in often under-resourced, poorly supervised and unsupported contexts are likely to be significant contributors to this state of affairs, it seems also that practitioners do not necessarily feel confident in their capacity to communicate with children nor always appreciate the purpose and relevance of this role.
