It has long been recognized that good communication has a beneficial effect on clinical outcomes, and patient information leaflets can improve knowledge. However, the information must not only be accurate but also written at an appropriate reading level to be helpful. National literacy surveys conducted since the 1970s have consistently shown that many adult Americans (about 20%) are functionally illiterate and that the average adult reading level is between the seventh and ninth grade levels.
