Notes

In this invited paper we introduced a "universal" method of using ion implantation in insulators to define optical waveguides and related photonic devices. There is now commercial interest in this work, shown by increasing Japanese and Chinese efforts as well as the MoD patents on SHG. Townsend has more than 150 papers in this area, plus a 2006 reprint of his highly cited (>350 times) book `Optical effects of ion implantation¿ and an expanded Japanese book version (2004).
