Falls are major causes of disability, mortality, hospital and long-term care admission due to injury of older people in the UK. National Service Framework for Older People states the priority of fall prevention in British Health and Social care services. Anti-falls designs relating to older people at their own home are reviewed. The physical and electronic design of aids includes assistive technology, device and living with sensors options. The systems design of monitor networks includes Information and Communication Technologies care. Other measures include environmental setting, and designs that encourage safe balancing and mobilizing. Characteristics that promote anti-falls designs are proposed: balance, strength, power, gait, endurance, flexibility, co-ordination, reaction and fear-free. The set of characteristics is presented as a heuristic device to aid designing-out falls of older people in residential settings. This review does not follow the format of a traditional literature review. That is because of the nature of the subject matter and the diverse literature sources in which the relevant materials were located. Often the literature took the form of commercial materials relating to safety, much of it found online rather than in academic journals or reports. The fragmented nature of the literature means it is difficult to claim that this is an exhaustive review. However, if the present study forms a platform for criticism and further work then one of its key objectives will have been achieved. It is hoped, will inform and encourage further effort to design-out falls of older people.
