Mas Ballet con Salsa

composition
posted on 2023-06-08, 00:40 authored by Martin Butler
Mas Ballet con Salsa is a distant follow-up to Ballet con Salsa, a work for brass dating back to 1987. It operates on a paradox; in this case that of having a polished, well-behaved classical ensemble handle material with roots in the heat and unruly sweat of Latin American dance, coloured by brass and gourds. Butler takes characteristic gestures, rhythms, and harmonies from its repertoire and re-constitutes them in his own way. It is Butler's personal response to the music instead of a recreation of it.
