Symposium: the ESRC strategic advisor initiative for social work and social care research: moving forward the agenda
The Economic and Social Research Countil (ESRC), with the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and the Institute for Research in Social Services (IRISS), has commissioned a major UK-wide consultation to generate strategic proposals for building academic capacity and engagement in social work and social care research. The ultimate aim is to promote a step change in the quality, range and depth of research produced, to advance the discipline and enrich the evidence base for practice and policy. This three-stage consultation began in September 2008 and is due for completion in September 2009. In Stage 1, a panel of selected academic social work consultants explore thematic research priorities for social work and social care and how to build capacity to address them. Stage 2 asks a panel of representatives of related disciplines, and research funders and users, to examine similar themes and the potential for engagement of their disciplines in interdisciplinary social work and social care research. Stage 3 invites panel consultants and other social work and social care researchers to respond to recommendations drawn from the previous two phases. The JSWEC symposium will provide one key element of the Stage 3 engagement and dialogue. It will bring draft recommendations from the earlier consultation stages to a wider reference group of social work and social care researchers, for critical comment. Three short presentations will provide the springboard for discussion, in turn, of the recommendations for: i) building academic social work capacity for high quality research on priority social work and social care research themes ii) engaging related disciplines in collaborative and interdisciplinary research and capacity development iii) generating a coherent set of strategic proposals to bring together the above, to enhance the disciplines and benefit the practice and policy fields Feedback from the symposium will contribute to findings included in the final report to the ESRC, and to shaping the recommendations for future investment and development.
