Parallel worlds: Collins' sensationalism and spiritualist practice

chapter
posted on 2023-06-08, 04:51 authored by Tatiana Kontou
In this chapter I examine the various ways in which text and seance intersect through their acute emphasis on the politics of sex and gender alongside their use of theatrical or melodramatic narrative tropes. By closely reading selected episodes in Collins No Name (1862) alongside seance reports and descriptions of spirit encounters I explore how both discourses domesticated the Victorian stage and the conventions of theatrical performance.
