Making design rules: a multidomain approach
journal contribution
posted on 2023-06-08, 05:11 authored by Stefano Brusoni, Andrea PrencipeDesign rules allocate functions to modules, identify operating principles, and set interfaces among modules that determine how organizations evolve. A case study of radical innovation in tire manufacturing illustrates the transition from old to new design rules through the joint adaptation of the manufacturing organization and the product to reflect changes in the underlying engineering knowledge. The case shows how knowledge evolution mediates organizational and technological change and makes any organization design openended and evolving.

Notes
The adoption of modular design of a plant is typically regarded as bringing with it a modular form of organisation. This paper, in a `world elite¿ journal, shows that for the recent bout of radical change in the tyre industry the opposite occurred. Prof Prencipe contributed his work on modularity to the study in conjunction with Dr Brusoni, a former SPRU doctoral student.Full text available
