Family and friends in eighteenth-century England: household, kinship and patronage
book
posted on 2023-06-08, 05:37 authored by Naomi TadmorThe book concerns the history of the family in eighteenth-century England. It provides a new interpretation of concepts of household, family, and kinship, starting from an analysis of contemporary language. It emphasizes the importance of the household in constructing notions of the family in the eighteenth century and uncovers a vibrant language of kinship, which recasts our understanding of kinship ties in the period. It also shows how strong ties of 'friendship' formed vital social, economic, and political networks among kin and non-kin. This book makes a substantial contribution to the history of the family and to eighteenth century history and is of value to all historians and literary scholars of the period. The book has also been issued in a separate paperback edition.
