The Welders' Reunion: Diary of an Oral Historian
This is an autobiographical account of a moment in an oral history project that I worked on in the late 1990s. The project grew out of some research I was doing for my Phd on letter writing during the Second World War. While I do not attempt to extrapolate or abstract in this paper, it implicitly addresses two current areas of debate in life history research. The first area is the different versions that people give of their lives, in youth and in old age; in letters, reminiscence and interview. The second area is that of the ethics of research and publication of people's life stories.
