Literary culture in colonial Ghana: 'how to play the game of life'

book
posted on 2023-06-08, 06:44 authored by Stephanie Newell
*Literary Culture in Colonial Ghana* examines the activities of African readers in the British colony of the Gold Coast between 1880 and 1940, and the pan-West African cultural and political networks that grew up around the English-language in the decades before decolonisation. The role of missionary presses in the production of vernacular and 'self-help' literature is assessed, as well as the ways in which local literary expectations and values were formed through the colonial education system.
