Optical Design of a Miniature Fourier Transform Lens System for a Hybrid Digital-Optical Correlator

The availability of high resolution spatial light modulators (SLMs) and modern digital signal processors (DSPs) allows a convenient hybridization of digital and optical image processing to produce a small and compact correlator system. The hybridization allows the optical Fourier transform lens system for a correlator to be compact, such that it will fit inside a conventional PC. We describe the design of the optical system. © 2002 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

This was EPSRC funded (GR/L90774/01) work which describes the development of an optical Fourier transforming lens. This was part of the hybrid correlator system invented in our group and has been further developed by the IIT (joby@physics.iitd.ernet.in), and Richard Hartman of AOS Inc (hartman@aos-inc.com). I describe how the system was built to produce a multi-resolution Fourier transform system including collimation and SLM optics. The system has a small physical size and tight optical specification. Many optical elements performed dual uses (e.g. the part of the collimation optics are also part of the Fourier transform optics).
