Work designed, executed, analysed and written largely by me - funded by my Royal Society of Edinburgh Fellowship; last author is PDRA on part of project who carried out the ordination analysis and helped with some writing; middle author helped with insect collection and identfication and with some data analysis. This study was one of the first to show the importance of indirect effects of soil type on the diversity of insect herbivore communities.Full text available
