Cytoplasmic dynein and its activating complex dynactin drive the retrograde transport of material necessary for the survival and proper functioning of neurons. Disruption of the dynein-dynactin complex by either over-expression of the dynamitin subunit or by mutations within individual dynein/dynactin subunits can cause motor neuron degeneration.
