Stereological Analysis of Leaf Cells of the Halophyte Suaeda maritima (L.) Dum
journal contribution
posted on 2023-06-08, 11:32 authored by M A Hajibagheri, J L Hall, Tim FlowersA stereological analysis of cells from the mesophyll, vascular bundles and central parenchyma in leaves of the halophyte Suaeda maritima (L.) Dum is described. The volume fraction of vacuole was greater in plants grown under saline conditions when compared with those under non-saline conditions, and there was a concurrent increase in the surface density of the tonoplast. The volume fraction of chloroplasts and cell wall fell under saline conditions, while that of the intercellular spaces increased. Salinization of the growth medium was accompanied by a large increase in the fraction of the cell volume occupied by the mitochondria: the increase in surface density of mitochondrial membranes was some 72% when averaged over all the cell types analysed.
