Abstract

The ideas outlined in this paper have developed from an exploration of differences between traditions in relation to teaching and learning, based upon a comparison of the Anglo-American curriculum tradition and the Continental European tradition of Didaktik, which has been pursued over more than ten years. Although a form of Didaktik is at the centre of thinking about teaching and teacher education in much of Continental Europe, this tradition is either unknown or little understood in the English-speaking world. This exploration of differences has offered a new dimension and fresh insights to the notion of reflective practice. This paper arose from work within Network 27 of the European Educational Research Association (EERA) on Didactics – Teaching and Learning which was established in 2006 and which I have been the main convenor of since that time. In turn this collaboration has led to the forthcoming publication by Hudson, B. and Meyer, M. (Eds.) entitled Beyond Fragmentation: Didactics, Learning and Teaching to be published by Barbara Budrich Publishers in 2011 which includes a chapter on didactical design for technology enhanced learning. This paper explores the implications of technology supported student-centred learning from within a framework of didactical design. The journal Zeitschrift für Erziehungswissenschaft has been listed in the Social Sciences Citation Index since July 2007. In July 2009 it reached a journal impact factor of 0.545, which is currently the highest ranking of German educational journals.
