Abstract
In May 1995, the British poet J.H. Prynne was invited to speak at a symposium on the work of the Dutch American Abstract Expressionist painter Willem de Kooning, held at what was then the Tate Gallery in London. In the course of an illuminating lecture on de Kooning’s 1963 oil painting 'Rosy-Fingered Dawn at Louse Point', Prynne put forward a theory linking the painting with Frank O’Hara’s 1957 poem ‘Ode to Willem de Kooning’, suggesting that a thread of influence - the trace of a sort of reverse ekphrasis - might connect the two works. This paper explores this suggestion in detail, presenting some practical evidence to support Prynne’s hypothesis before moving to consider it on a more theoretical level.
