This paper explores the evolution of the Chief Scientific Advisor role, from its origins in the US and UK, to its increasing popularity in other national and international contexts. It distils some of the lessons learned in recent years about the strengths and limitations of the CSA model. And it reflects on what the recent argument over a European Commission CSA reveals about the politics and prospects for scientific advice.
