Equatorial Guinea: lurching toward democracy

When the government of Equatorial Guinea decided late last year to join Africa's democracy movement, it did so in a style typical of the rule of President Obiang - dissidents were rounded up and imprisoned. Nudged toward democracy by international donor nations and agencies whose aid comprises 70% of the country's economy, Obiang outlined reforms that ensure his government retains control, while dividing the opposition.
