Defining, measuring, and tackling energy poverty

chapter
posted on 2023-06-08, 23:30 authored by Benjamin SovacoolBenjamin Sovacool
How large is the problem of energy poverty? What business models and technologies can best address it? What barriers remain, and where does new research need to take us? This chapter addresses each of these questions in turn. It first defines and measures the prevalence of energy poverty using the most up-to-date statistics from the International Energy Agency and others. It then discusses an array of grid, micro-grid, and off-grid technologies that can expand energy access and the partnership models businesses and the international community utilizes to disseminate that technology. It corrects nine common misconceptions related to energy poverty and provides ideas for improvement. The chapter concludes by calling for a new paradigm of energy access and development
