Sight and sound: visualizing music in software instruments
Magnusson’s talk will contrast the open nature of programming languages versus the limits of packaged software. Using the ixi lang and Threnoscope live coding environments as examples, Magnusson will look at tools that use sight to complement sound. The presentation will also touch on how music software development goes hand in hand with music research; a process in which the exacting requirements of digital systems brings out a strong understanding of the musical source domain. The possibilities of music composition and performance practices which integrate software development will also be discussed.
