Abstract
In the UK and the USA, social work academics must balance the requirements of research excellence against the time, expertise, and focus needed to ensure students are ready to practice safely and effectively with clients and community members, service users and carers. However, there is variation in the extent to which academics have experience and expertise in both research and practice. This chapter presents baseline information needed to fully appreciate the nature of the problem by describing academics’ demographic characteristics, practice qualifications and experience, and research skills and activity, and concludes with a discussion of the key issues in terms of developing the future social work academic workforce.
