This chapter uses student contributions to historicise the use of Hebdige’s theories of subculture by academics across disciplines since the 1980s. It argues that the theories that we use in our teaching can also be applied back on ourselves in the broader context of our role within Higher Education. It also posits the reclaiming of ideas of subcultural resistance by history students has helped them to demonstrate their role as active interpreters of their world.
