Cell migration in the patterning of the nervous system of Hydra
Different regional nerve densities in Hydra have often been thought to arise by position-dependent determination of cells. Now two recent articles by Shelley Heimford and Hans Bode1,2 suggest that extensive cell migration also contributes to patterning in the nervous system. These findings are particularly interesting since the cells which migrate may represent a developmentally distinct population of committed nerve cell precursors.
