Abstract

This is an interview with the Taiwanese director Cheng Yu-Chieh, in which he discusses his latest film 'Wawa No Cidal' (2015). The film, which Cheng co-directed with Lekal Sumi, depicts the contemporary struggles of Taiwan’s indigenous community.

In the interview, Cheng discusses topics including the ongoing discrimination facing indigenous communities in Taiwan, the challenges involved in collaborating with a village tribe during the making of his film, and the process of working with a non-professional cast.

For readers more familiar with auteurs such as Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Tsai Ming-Liang, the interview offers the opportunity to expand their knowledge of contemporary Taiwanese film and one its most original new voices.
