Abstract
This body of work investigates what happens when new technology collides with a thinking of space as process.
The term "contact zone," as James Clifford borrows from the anthropologist Mary Louise Pratt, designates a node of intersection "in which peoples geographically and historically separated come into contact with each other" (1997:192). Digital Contact Zones interrogates how digital media negotiates these sites of convergence through a series of collaborative and participatory projects, viewed via the lens of what Massey described as "the arena of space." Rather than just seeing digital media as process-based, these works simultaneously explore space as a process in which "there are always connections yet to be made, juxtapositions yet to flower into interaction, or not, potential links which may never be established. Loose ends and ongoing stories" (2005:107).
Digital Contact Zones is the final work in a series of interconnected works, each investigating spaces of contact between participants and digital modes of making. Produced through an iterative process of development in which each investigation informs the next, Digital Contact Zones reflects and builds upon the outcomes of three types of digital practice: participatory ‘maker’ workshops, a digital cartography website (LawDigital) and a digital game (Digital Contact Zones).
